All BCB rep teams have formal tryouts where players undergo an evaluation and selection process. There is a $20.00 non-refundable tryout fee for all athletes that must be paid in full prior to the first tryout. Typically there are 4 tryouts per team and in the event of being selected to a rep team, each player will be required to pay a rep team fee of $240.00 which includes player insurance and a uniform to keep.
There are no rep teams at the Jr. Mini level which runs programs for children in grades primary to 3. All BCB Jr. programs are delivered as a recreational program and use a registration process where no tryouts or evaluations take place.
Under 12 Mini and Under 14 Bantam:
Player evaluators are present for tryouts and evaluate each player using an evaluation form and a specific set of criteria. At the end of each tryout, evaluation forms are to be passed on to the Executive Director. If the Executive Director is not present, the coach running the tryout will collect the forms. Evaluation forms are neither shared with the public nor the participating players in the tryout. Evaluators that are participating in the tryout are discouraged from comparing or sharing results of their evaluation.
Players that are participating in an evaluation tryout are to be given either a numbered jersey or a number marked on the player’s arm or calf for identification purposes. The Executive Director or the coach will assign the numbers to the name of each player participating in the tryout. However, only the numbers are to be recorded on the evaluator’s forms. Numbers will be randomly assigned during each tryout.
At the end of the final tryout, all evaluation forms are then reviewed by the Executive Director and/or the Vice President of Rep Basketball. The coaching staff is also involved in team selection as they have the final say on the bottom positions of the team roster. On a 12 team roster, the first 9 positions are based on the evaluations with the final 3 being the coach’s pick. On a 10 team roster, the first 8 positions are based on the evaluations with the final 2 spots being the coach’s pick. The coaching staff may consult with the evaluators and BCB officials to fill these final spots.
Once certified, an official team roster is assembled and posted on the BCB website. Teams are typically posted within two days from the last tryout with a posting time of 6:00PM.
All Categories Above U14 Bantam:
There are no evaluators present for tryouts above the Under 14 age category unless requested by the coaching staff. The staff may also choose to bring in their own independent evaluators and consult with the Executive Director and VP of Rep Basketball. Once players are selected an official team roster is assembled and posted on the BCB website. Teams are typically posted within two days from the last tryout with a posting time of 6:00PM.
Selection of an Evaluator:
BCB makes every effort to attract qualified evaluators by seeking individuals who have experience either as a basketball player or a coach. A parent of a player participating in a tryout is NOT permitted to be an evaluator and can offer no consultation of any kind.
Selection of a Rep Coach:
BCB is equally committed to attracting qualified rep team coaches by engaging in recruitment and review related activities. As well, individuals are able to apply online via our website. BCB will choose the head coach for each rep team while the head coach can then choose an assistant coach. All applications will be reviewed by BCB's Board of Directors. Upon approval all coaches must undergo a Criminal Records Check and consent to a search by the Nova Scotia Child Abuse Registry.
